The Mah Jong Sofa was designed for Roche Bobois by German artist, Hans Hopfer in the 1970s. During his career, Hopfer worked in Argentina as a painter, sculptor, and designer. He has been recognized as the inventor of “seating landscapes.” Inspired by the Chinese game, the design of the Mah Jong modular sofa introduced a new way of designing seating arrangements, and has become one of Roce Bobois’ most recognizable designs. Celebrities like Gigi Hadid and Joe Jonas are known to own this sofa.
Hopfer broke the design mold with the Mah Jong sofa, challenging the way spaces can be organized. Some worlds finest design houses like Missoni and Jean Paul Gaultier have collaborated with Roche Bobois to create unique upholstered versions.
