Harry Bertoia was an Italian-born American artist best known for his jewelry, furniture, and sculptures. Bertoia moved to the U.S. in 1930 to pursue art, and soon after attended the Cranbrook Academy of Art. There and in the following years, his talent for welding, metal work, and plywood work was realized. In 1950, fellow Cranbrook alums Hans and Florence Knoll offered Bertoia free rein to introduce his own chair collection with Knoll.

The Bird Chair was designed in 1952 and is one of many from Bertoia’s collection of wire form furniture. Knoll still produces the Bird Chair today, along with the full Bertoia Collection. The iconic collection is recognized as some of the greatest furniture design of the 20th century.
