Better With Age: Zoe Schlacter and Buzz Slutzky

What if the people on MTV Cribs had invested in timeless statement furniture and decor instead of Bentleys and a fridge full of energy drinks? You’d get Better With Age, a peek inside the homes of notable designers and tastemakers who share a love of all things pre-loved.

Our sixteenth episode features Zoe Schlacter (they/them) and Buzz Slutzky (they/them) – life partners and Brooklyn-based interdisciplinary artists and educators. They describe their home as “eclectic Cancerian,” “sentimental queer,” and “collected, sentimental, maximalism.” Buzz and Zoe have found joy in decorating their space in this high-fem aesthetic, even though their gender presentations have evolved away from the super feminine.

In 2020, Zoe founded their namesake textile and home goods line known for its maximalist patterns and bold, adventurous color combinations. Zoe’s playful sensibility draws inspiration from children’s art, LGBTQ culture, craft traditions, and postmodern art and design—namely, Op Art and Memphis design conventions. Buzz’s work uses intimacy and humor to bring juiciness into historical research and autobiographical narrative.

Buzz’s practice juxtaposes text and images through video, drawing, performance, pyrography, and other mediums. They have exhibited work at The Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia, Cooper Union, and the Boston Center for the Arts. They teach filmmaking at The New School and Art + Design at SUNY Purchase.

Check out their Prospect Park home, which is filled with personal objects like a hand mold from a rubber factory in Buzz’s mom’s hometown, unicorn drinking glasses that were passed down from Zoe’s grandmother, and ceramic poodles — coincidentally, Buzz and Zoe separately owned one before meeting.
